For 1986, Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo, known internally as the 951. It had a Turbo and intercooled version of the 944's engine and produced 220bhp. Later in 1988, a Turbo S version was introduced with 250bhp which was then adopted as standard from the 1989 onwards. At the time, the 944 Turbo was the fastest four cylinder production car available.
