One of the most famous rally cars of all time that defined a generation of the era, the Subaru Impreza GC8 S3 Group A rally car was driven by the late Colin McRae and co-driven by Derek Ringer. Together they won the 1995 World Rally Championship and also secured the manufacturers' title for Subaru. The season consisted of 8 rallies and on the final event it was a 1, 2, 3 finish for Subaru.

The introduction of the Impreza into World Rally Championship racing was in 1993, as the Subaru World Rally Team had previously used its larger Legacy saloon. The Impreza immediately achieved a podium on its debut on the 1993 1000 Lakes Rally. The Impreza GC8 S3 Group A brought Subaru three consecutive WRC constructors' titles from 1995 to 1997. In 1998 it was followed by a 2 door GM8 S5 version, the first of the newer WRC cars.
