From 1997 WRC onwards, the 2 door GM8 body shell was used and built by Prodrive. These newer Subaru WRC cars also gained slightly different colours, a lighter blue and a brighter yellow sponsor colour.

The earlier WRC S3 cars still had the conventional gearbox but the later S5's gained the Prodrive 6 speed Semi auto gearbox. The wide body coupe body style became an instant hit, with this car P2 WRC driven by Colin McRae and Nicky Grist on the 1997 Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo, but ultimately retiring with accident damage. It later competed in many other rallies.
