The 911 996 GT3 was introduced in 1999 as a homologation model for the cars entered in the FIA GT3 cup. As with Porsche's previous 911 RS models back in the 1970s, the 996 GT3 was focused on racing, and so was stripped of unnecessary items that added weight to the car, e.g. most of the sound deadening, rear seats, rear loud speakers, sunroof, air conditioning and even the lower centre console on the fascia.

The engine of the 996 GT3 set it apart from most of the other 996 models as it was based on the unit used in the 962 and 911 GT1 race cars. That engine was known as the 'Mezger' engine, after its designer Hans Mezger. A total of 1868 of these cars were built, making it very collectable.
